The huge 'Statue of Equality' of Prime Minister Narendra Modi "dedicated to the world" Sri Ramanujacharya on Saturday was made in China and cost around Rs 135 crore.
The order was placed in August 2015 to China-based Aeroson Corporation, although an Indian company was also vying to win the contract.
Casting work was done in China and the statue was brought here in 1,600 pieces. Installation took place in 2017-18 and took about 15 months.
At 216 feet, the statue is the second tallest sitting statue in the world. It is made of Panchaloha (alloy of five metals) - copper, silver, gold, zinc and titanium - of which 80 per cent is copper.

Sage Sri Ramanujacharya is credited with initiating social reforms and reviving Hinduism a thousand years ago and inspiring devotional movements in the country.
The Samata-Kendra, around the idol of Sri Ramanujacharya, is home to 108 replicas of 108 sacred Hindu shrines in the country, spread over 45 acres near the Hyderabad International Airport. Jupally Rameshwara Rao of My Home Group donated the land and the project cost - “About Rs. 1,000 crore ”- donations received.
The agreement with the Chinese company was signed by Jupally, Chairman, My Home Group of Industries, on behalf of Sri Ramanuja Millennium Managers.
The statue was erected to commemorate the 1000th birth anniversary of Sri Ramanujacharya (born in 1017 in present day Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu) with the hope of lasting another 1,000 years and also spreading the message of equality in society.
According to the famous monk Tridandy Chinna Jiyar Swami, who designed the project, the original plan was to have a stone carved figurine on a hill somewhere in Tamil Nadu 10 years ago.
But after two years of searching, no suitable rocky hill was found. Chin Jiyar agreed to the present statue as Jupally came forward to donate land at Muchhinthal for the project.
The 14 models of the statue of Sri Ramanujacharya were originally made incorporating the principles of agama and architecture, three of which were further improved by 3D scanning. The final sample was then sent to China.
