Vaidyanatha Swamy Temple, Thirumalapady, Ariyalur District

Vaidyanatha Swamy Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the village of Thirumalapadi near Thirumanur in Ariyalur taluka of Ariyalur district in Tamil Nadu. Swami is called Vaidyanatha Swami and the mother is called Sundarambigai. The temple has two Ambika temples.

Vaidyanatha Swami: Sage Siladha, a resident of Thiruvaiyaru, performed penance for Lord Shiva for the child. An incarnation told him that his wish could be fulfilled if he performed the Putrakameshti Yajna and that he would get the box with the child when he plowed the land for the Yajna. He was advised to raise a child who was only 16 years old. Some sage found the box and when he opened it, he saw a child with 3 eyes, 4 shoulders and a crescent moon adorned on his head.

The sage closed the box in astonishment and opened it again and found the child in ordinary human form. He named the baby Japesar. The young man reached the age of 14, who was only two years old to complete his destination lifetime. The sage was so upset that his son could still live for two more years. Realizing his father's anguish, Japesar stood on one leg at the Ayana pilgrimage pool in Thiruvaiyaru and began penance. The creatures in the pool slowly began to eat him. Japesar was not afraid of their danger.

Lord Shiva, pleased with his penance, completely healed him and gave him a long life. Later, Japesar married Suyasambika in Thirumalapadi. Even after marriage Japesar continued his penance and was appointed as the head of the Shiva Ganas and later as the security guard at the first gate of Kailasamu and was named Nandeeshwara. Japeshar is called Vaidyanatha Swami because Lord Shiva healed all his wounds.

Vajratambeshwara: The male beast sage established the lingam here. Once, Lord Brahma wanted to remove this linga from here and establish it elsewhere. Because the lingam was as strong as a thunderbolt (diamond), Brahma could not remove it. Hence Lord Shiva is called Vajratambeshwara. Devotees believe that the four rivers in front of the Brahma idol in Koshtamu prevented Brahma's efforts.

Vairathoonu: The male sage brought the lingam from the realm of truth and worshiped it here but later could not remove it. Hence it is called Vairathunu.

Thirumalapadi: According to the mythology, Lord Shiva performed a cosmic dance with a maju (ax-like weapon) in his hand during the month of Vaikasi Vishakam for Markundeyu. Hence, the place was called Majuwadi, which later became known as Thirumalapadi. In the Ardhamandapam, in the right hand, there is an idol of Maludeeshwara with an ax, a trident and a noose. He is also said to have saved the sage Markandeya from Yamudi here.

Uttaravahani Kshetra: Thirumalapadi is considered to be the Uttaravahani Kshetra as the Kollidam flows from south to north here.

Moon relieved of skin disease: According to mythology, the moon suffered from skin disease. He came here and visited Lord Shiva and did penance. Lord Shiva appeared before him and ordered him to light lamps in the Navagraha pits. Chandran did as ordered and got relief from skin disease.

Emperor CB relieved of his Navagraha error: Emperor CB was relieved of his Navagraha error by lighting lamps in the Navagraha pits here.

Lord Sundarar appeared in a dream: It is believed that St. Sundarar appeared in a dream and asked the Swami to visit and praise the place, so that the saint came to the temple and addressed him as 'Ponnar Maniane' in his famous Thevaram hymn.

Literary reference: It is believed that the lord of this place appeared in a dream of St. Sundarar and asked him to visit this place. At the request of Lord Shiva, Sundarar came to the temple and sang 'Ponnar Maniane' in his famous Thevaram hymns. The temple lord is praised in the Thevaram hymns of St. Sundarar. The golden-skinned lord, dressed in tiger skin, is likened to a majestic lord with chondroitinous flowers that radiate fragrance from the head, hair that shines like lightning, a crescent moon and a precious gem that blesses the world.
